I tend to have a few people talk to me about their hesitations on traveling/adventuring alone, this has always seemed a bit odd to me but I guess it is because I have gotten so used to it I never understand why there is a hesitation to do it.
It can be quite a scary thing, especially if you’ve never done it before, it’s all well and fine travelling alone but what happens when you get to an unknown city and you don’t know anyone there? Where do you start?
My secret when I travel alone; live like a local!
I love doing this, walk places, embrace the culture, ask people about navigating public transport, speak to bar tenders (go earlier in the day, they tend to always give good advice on great places and things to do) and when they see you’re new in town, sometimes they ask you to join their plans.
Adventuring alone is something I do when I don’t want the fantasy of place spoilt by friends wanting to go see landmarks and party every night (not that I don’t enjoy these things though). Don’t be afraid to talk to people, trust your instincts on them, good or bad and act accordingly.
I have adventured alone to quite a few places and in a few days I have a friendship group, because on an adventure an acquaintance becomes a friend really quickly and a friend becomes two. Say YES! to as much as you can, with adventuring alone you should have an open mind and an open heart.
No matter how long I’m going away for I look at the situation like “I have just moved here” not just visiting and when you move somewhere new, your mind makes places feel more like home.
So next time you think of adventuring alone for however long, be bold! Try and live like a local, you might end up calling wherever you end up another home.
